According to modern medicine, arthritis is categorized in two types:

1) Rheumatoid arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs. About 1% of the world's population is afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis, women three times more often than men. Onset is most frequent between the ages of 40 and 50, but people of any age can be affected. It can be a disabling and painful condition, which can lead to substantial loss of functioning and mobility if not adequately treated. Rheumatoid arthritis can causes fever, shifting pain, swelling at joints and redness.
The major complaint by individuals who have arthritis is joint pain. Pain is often a constant and may be localized to the joint affected. The pain from arthritis is due to inflammation that occurs around the joint, damage to the joint from disease, daily wear and tear of joint, muscle strains caused by forceful movements against stiff painful joints and fatigue."

2) Osteoarthritis: The main symptom is pain, causing loss of ability and often stiffness. "Pain" is generally described as a sharp ache, or a burning sensation in the associate muscles and tendons. OA can cause a crackling noise (called "crepitus") when the affected joint is moved or touched, and patients may experience muscle spasm and contractions in the tendons. In cases, where there is damage to cartilage at joints, joint replacement surgery or resurfacing may be required. In ayurveda, in those advanced cases operation can be avoided and pain can be reduced upto 90%.The cases in which there is no damage to cartilage or bones, can treated successfully and complete relief can be achieved.
